"And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her therefore to help me” – Luke 10:39-40
Jesus went to a village where he was welcomed by a woman name Martha, who had a younger sister Mary who lived with her.
Mary was helping her older sister with entertaining their house guest. But when she heard Jesus teaching the other disciples, she left helping her sister to go and listen. Martha was not happy – this bothered her. There was just too much work to be done.
Her eagerness to entertain her house guests, even if it meant working long hours blinded her from the importance of taking some time out to rest and for spending time with Jesus.
When we become too involve with our career, business or work that we are willing to spend long hours to complete a project, make a little extra money, impress the boss or a client, or to get ahead, it can rob us of the things that are important in life - things that require just as much attention and time dedicated to working all the time. Your body needs rest, your family needs you, your children needs you, and your soul needs nourishing.
How important would it be for you to take a break from your busy work schedule and spend some time at the feet of Jesus to hear what he has to say? What would you do differently to make this happen?
