"And another also said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” – Luke 9:61-62
In order for a plowman to finish his work, he must focus. His eyes must continually be in a forward position looking ahead with a purpose to finish his work, instead of constantly stopping and looking back.
In the same way, a man who professes to be a servant of Christ, yet keeps looking back to the things of the world, things from his past and even current attractions that are dominating his heart and mind, cannot accomplish his work for the Lord.
The word of God declares that, those who keep looking back on anything that would distract them from whole heartedly serving Him and finishing their work, is not fit for the kingdom of God. That is to say, they are not suitable or appropriate for doing and finishing the work of the Lord.
When serving the Lord, He wants your full attention to the work He has called you to do. It should be your main focus and objective during the time the Lord has given you in this temporary world.
Upon finishing His work for the Father in Heaven, our Lord and Savior said these words:
“I have glorified you on the earth: I have finished the work which you gave me to do” – John 17:4
We may not know the hour, day or time of which we will take our last breath, but at least we can be at peace knowing we have done our very best to perform and finish the work, the Lord has given us to do.
