"If you love me, keep my commandment…If a man love me, he will keep my words…he that has my words and keep them, he it is that loves me…” - John 14:15, John 14:23a, John 14:21a.
The bible gave us just a little bit of history concerning Enoch - "And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him" (Genesis 5:24). He loved God with all of his heart, mind and soul, that he walked with God in obedience to His word. Proof of this is clearly obvious, because generations later, he is still remembered as the one who walked with God. An example of a man whose sincere love for the Lord, will be seen in his walk with the Lord.
Many people say they love God, but are not walking in obedience to his teachings. But the truth of the matter is, if there is true love for Christ, then there will be a sincere desire to keep His words and govern ourselves accordingly.
To love Christ is to love Him above everything else. It is to love Him enough to want to follow Him, to be attached Him, to want to be around Him and to feel empty without Him. And because of this kind of love for Christ, it will move you to doing all you can to obey His teachings.
Choosing to Live by a Different Set of Principles
How do we know when a person who claim to be a born again Christian is not walking in obedience of God’s word? When we are sincerely reading and examining the scriptures on a regular basis, leaning not unto our own understanding; we become familiar with the teachings of Christ. And so, because we are familiar with the teachings of Christ, we recognize when a person is living in contradiction of Christ’s teachings. That person is judged by the scriptures, and by the fruits that are being produced from a life of disobedience, which is an ungodly life. Ungodliness is a direct disregard of God’s word. If you are purposely walking in opposition of God’s word, then you are purposely disregarding God’s word.
Let’s put it another way - if in God’s word He says “don’t do” and you “do anyway” - how are you obeying God? How are you living a life of obedience to God, when you’ve decided to live by a different set of principles, other than those that have been set forth in God’s Holy Word for His people to live by, that they may be distinguished from those in the world? Especially as a new creature in Christ?
Anytime you choose to do things your way, when you are told to do it a certain way, you are out of compliance and in contradiction of an order or command that was given to you. And this “sir” or “ma’am” does not please our Father in Heaven.
So now, the ultimate question for you is, how can you say you love Christ when you are clearly living in opposition of His teachings? Do you sincerely believe you can walk in contradiction of God’s word, and yet declare you love the Lord? How can this be?
Enoch’s love for God was remembered and left for an example to us all that we too can live a life of obedience to our Father in Heaven, if we sincerely have a desire to do so. This will be without excuse, hesitation and not up for debate.
You will either obey or not obey - plain and simple. Your decision will determine how committed you are to following the teachings of Christ, and to pleasing God in your life.
